Liveness event -- deadline approaching

Call for participants

Why would you make live work in an age of mass communications? Why work in more or less the only field which still insists on presence? For artists interested in “the contemporary” this area of live performance seems like a bit of a backwater. Do you have something against mass-reproduction? Do you work from some quaint notion about immediacy and real presence?

I don’t know.

Answer the question.

(Forced Entertainment 1996)

The Experimental Media Research Group (Emerge) at Bournemouth University invites calls for:

LIVEness
A one-day intensive multidisciplinary exchange laboratory for practitioners who wish to explore concepts, philosophies and technologies of the LIVE through creative practice.

Date: Friday 27th of April
Location:  Bournemouth University

Deadline for proposals: Friday 20th Jan.

Description of the day:
A one-day intensive experimental workshop for artists, writers, choreographers, media practitioners and technologists - seeking to develop and extend their critical understanding of the LIVE - to deepen and underscore artistic creative practice and ultimately further future collaborations.

The aim of the workshop is to further understanding and critical awareness of the conceptual and technical issues that relate to the notion of the LIVE. Throughout the day attendees will engage in a number of workshop and knowledge sharing events with the other participants, a facilitator and the multidisciplinary members of the BU Emerge research group. Through this sharing, participants will obtain a deeper understanding of how these issues relate to their personal as well as the extended field of creative practice.  It is hoped that this exchange will also foster opportunities for future collaboration in creative outputs and funding applications.

Indicative Schedule
The day will start with a keynote presentation framing the theme for the event.  Through a series of short presentations participants will then explore how notions of 'the live' impact on their own working practice. Participants will then be split into small groups to further develop the notion of the LIVE in relation to creative practice and critical dialogue, with the view to creating a response to the challenges of addressing liveness in your work. Technical support for the creation of content will be provided. At the end of the day, groups will be encouraged to share their findings, be that through performance, presentation or otherwise….

How to apply:
Participants may apply for the limited places through this open call. We will announce whether you have been successful by the beginning of March.

In order to apply please submit 500 words stating how you explore notions of Liveness in your practice and how you would benefit from attending the workshop.

Please email applications to: Katy Connor: kconnor@bournemouth.ac.uk

We regret that we cannot cover and transport of accommodation costs. There will also be a charge of £10 to cover lunch and tea breaks.

>
>The LSE Media and Communications Department invites abstracts for papers
>on 'Cosmopolitanism, New Media and Protests', to be presented at our
>fifth annual PhD Symposium on 15 June 2012. Research students from
>across disciplines in the social sciences are welcome to apply. The
>deadline for submission of proposals is Monday 20 February 2012.
>
>In the last two years, significant waves of civil protests have been
>taking place around the globe. There are many examples: the so-called
>'Arab Spring' has targeted totalitarian regimes in the Arab world; the
>'indignados' in Spain, Greece and other EU countries have been
>protesting against austerity, unemployment and corrupt governments; the
>#Occupy movement, in the USA and Europe, emerged as a response to the
>financial crisis, targeting financial elites and demanding social
>change; there have also been riots in a number of UK cities; and
>political protests in Russia.
>
>On the one hand, these developments can be approached as local events in
>which information technologies and new media played a significant role
>in the mediation of protests. On the other, we could argue that we are
>witnessing the emergence of a new global political system, as all these
>events are interrelated and reflect the rise of a new type of
>cosmopolitan networked society. In the latter case, new media may not
>just be a tactical tool but a major factor for system change.
>
>Conceptualising cosmopolitanism as a contested term resting on a tension
>between the local and the global, the Symposium will examine the
>mediation of protests through new media platforms as they expand within
>and beyond national borders. The key question we will address is: How
>are new media implicated in the creation of cosmopolitan dispositions
>and protest mobilisations?
>
>The Symposium welcomes, but is not limited to, abstracts in the
>following areas of enquiry:
>
>- Local/global media in protests
>- Cosmopolitan identity and cosmopolitan publics
>- Global consciousness
>- Social media and political change
>- Networked journalism
>- Mediation of protests
>- Cosmopolitan identity and engagement in protests
>- Media attention >- The state-networks relationship and mediation
>- Mediating violence and representation of suffering in protests.

Call for papers - Development of ICT in Africa #phdchat #loveHE

>
>Call for papers

>Communications &Strategies
>Dossier to be published in no. 86 2nd quarter 2012
>Development of ICT in Africa
>
>
>Edited by Laurent GILLE, Anders HENTEN, Robin MANSELL & Didier POUILLOT
>
>ICTs can be seen as systemic tools for economic and social development.
>
>This has been acknowledged for decades in Africa first with respect to
>telecommunications and later with respect to information and
>communication technologies (ICT) generally. Lately, much emphasis has
>been given to the many different social applications of ICT such as
>e-learning, e-health, e- governance, etc.
>
>For many years nothing much happened concerning telecommunications and
>ICT development in Africa. However, over the last decade mobile
>communication has developed rapidly in Africa providing the basis for
>voice communication and, increasingly, for a growing variety of data
>communications services.
>
>This call for papers seeks contributions on experiences regarding the
>development of telecommunications and especially mobile communications,
>the adoption and use of ICTs, and the policies and regulations framing
>these developments. Which policies and regulations have had positive
>effects on the development, adoption and use of ICTs and what are the
>less positive experiences?
>
>We also welcome contributions on the applications of ICT in various
>public social contexts (health, learning, etc.), in smaller and larger
>business environments and for private residential purposes. What are the
>experiences so far regarding ICTs supporting public services and how has
>the use of mobile communications influenced the strategies and
>performance of micro, small, and large businesses?
>
>In the selection of papers for this dossier consideration will be given
>to papers that highlight areas where technology solutions and
>applications have developed earlier or faster than in other countries or
>regions of the world. The take-up of technology in African countries
>frequently is seen as following more economically developed countries.
>However, in some areas, for instance, e-money, African countries are
>among the leaders. Papers analyzing other similar developments will be
>welcome.
>
>
>Potential Topics:
>. Benchmarking telecom market status in Africa: priorities (fixed vs
>mobile coverage), pricing, regulation and competition policiesŠ; .
>Opportunities and barriers to the development of innovative services and
>usage (m-payment, e-health, e-learning, e-governanceŠ); . Roles of
>intermediaries (social movement organizations, industry sector
>organizations, etc.) in encouraging demand for ICT applications; .
>Industrial organization: strategy of western telcos in Africa, new
>emerging African groups; . Impact of telecom network deployments on
>Internet and media developments in Africa.

>
>The forum aims to examine, explore and reflect on the impact of
>globalization on our profession withithe context of rapid changes. As
>global communities merge and media systems converge, the boundaries
>within which we communicate are blurring and disappearing. The shifts in
>economic and political power present new challenges and opportunities for
>public relations and communication practitioners and scholars. Global
>issues such as climate change, health, food security, poverty reduction
>and transitioning democracies offer our discipline a much larger template

>they become more mobile, more media-savvy and more multicultural.
>Moreover, audiences are active 'produsers' of media messages in a world

>It is within this context that we ask how organisations and individual
>practitioners respond to this new world without borders? How will
>universities prepare future practitioners for this shifting template? How
>do we connect and meaningfully engage with cultures that may otherwise be
>unfamiliar? Will English continue to be the lingua franca of the

International Conference on Culture, Education and Media € JUNE 2012

Deutsche Welle via TV, Radio and Internet:
News, Analysis and Service from Germany and Europe in 30 Language

25-27 JUNE 2012 · BONN , GERMANY

International conference
Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum 2012

Culture. Education. Media.

Shaping a sustainable world

Approximately 850 million people around the world are illiterate, most
of them in crisis regions and war zones.

In 2002, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to
declare the ten-year period from 2005-2014 the Decade of Education for
Sustainable Development. It is increasingly evident that education,
culture and upbringing form the key to peaceful co-existence and a
sustainable future.

The 2012 Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum will examine the role and
responsibility of the media with their images and messages. How can
media contribute constructively to cultural diversity? How can they
serve to enhance awareness of the essential importance of education for
sustainable development? Can media themselves carry out educational
activities? Do they serve as a role model for presenting and conveying
educational content?

The conference is divided into the following subject areas:

*Right to education and Education For All (EFA)
*Preserving and advancing cultural diversity / World Heritage
*Political culture and intercultural dialogue
*Education for sustainability (cultural, economic, political, social)
*New approaches to learning (E-learning, social media etc.)
*Media and education What can the media contribute?

The Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum is a congress with international
reach. It draws media representatives from around the world including
many of Deutsche Welle¹s partners and people from the fields of
politics, culture, business, development cooperation and science. About
1600 participants from more than 100 countries attended the conference
in 2011.

More information on the conference can be found here:
www.dw-gmf.de

Deutsche Welle is Germany¹s international broadcaster. Its task is to
explain Germany¹s role as a cultured European nation with democratic
freedoms based on the rule of law, and to promote understanding and
exchange between cultures and peoples.
